VMware chief opponent was SDN market leader Cisco network with two providers take different approaches to SDN - an approach only VMware software, arguing that the Cisco hardware remains the major networks.
VMware vice president of engineering systems worldwide, Dominick Delfino recently told CRN US a large majority of its customers are running on network equipment Cisco SDN."Frankly, probably about three quarters of our customers are running [NSX] through a network of Cisco today - they are the market leader," Delfino said.

Why (and how) VMware created

Why (and how) VMware created a new type of virtualization just for containers:

Media management and traditional virtualization providers - - that is for packaging applications as container mounted ABOUT hype in the last year, questions about what this technology was raised. Some have wondered: will kill containers VMs?

VMware responded with a resounding no issue at its annual conference in San Francisco last week. But officials say that the containers of the Company may benefit from a new kind of platform management. He built a new type of single container virtualization.

Container virtualization

There are half a decade, VMware has revolutionized the technology industry has helped the development of enterprise-class hypervisors place that ushered in the era of server virtualization.

Last week, the company unveiled an STI Photon project name redesigned conventional virtualization software. It is a popular derivative slightly ESX hypervisor company that was specifically designed to run application containers.

"Basically, it is always the foundation of virtualization," said Kit Colbert, vice president and CTO of VMware cloud native applications. Photon Colbert called "micro-display" with "enough" for the positive attributes characteristic of virtualization, while being packed in a lightweight design perfect for containers.

Photon project has two key elements. One is called photon machine - born ESX hypervisor software is installed directly on physical servers. Drops miniature virtual machines are placed in containers. It includes a guest operating system, the user can choose. Default photon machine comes with customized Linux distribution called VMware OS photon, which also has the container company designed to be easy to use.

The second important piece is the controller name of photons, which is a plan multi-tenant control that can handle tens, if not hundreds or thousands of cases photon machine. Photon controller Photon Machines available groups and ensure they have access to network resources and storage as needed.

The combination of photons and the machine controller Photon Create a template for a scale-out environment that has no single point of failure and exposes a single logical criterion API developers can write. In theory, traders can implement projects of photons, developers can write applications that run on it.

With Photon project will integrate several open source projects, Docker: as a container for runtime support and Google and Cloud Foundry Pivotil kubernetes for the implementation of senior management. (Photon manages supply infrastructure kubernetes CF manage application deployments.)

VMware is priceless for any platform in September, but will be available at the time this year in private beta.

VMware was surprised to find

VMware was surprised to find out that its biggest rival, Cisco, owned 5% of its company:

VMware was surprised to discover that his biggest rival, Cisco, which owns 5% of the company.

Cisco and VMware technology two great rivals, had a confrontation of any kind this week.

In one corner, VMware had its great customer conference, VMworld, where more than 23,000 people flocked to San Francisco. One thing I heard VMware plans to overthrow the king Cisco network industry.

In the other corner, Cisco had its huge exhibition Global sales experience in Las Vegas, where it is pumped to its sales force of 20,000 men to go out and sell (and beat VMware).

In a pre-show interview with Business Insider, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said that among several new businesses round of billion potential of VMware, is happier Product NSX, which is competing with Cisco.

"This is an industry that has been operating in essentially the same architecture for 25 years," Gelsinger said. NSX described as "radical".

NSX reached $ 1.25 billion acquisition of VMware in a startup called Nicira few years in which VMware outbid Cisco for starting ago, and in the process destroyed the Cisco relationship with your partner once close EMC. (EMC is the parent company of VMware.), John Chambers, Cisco and VMware was trash talking Nicira business since.

This week, Gelsinger said basically the World Chambers Network grudge EMC CEO Joe Tucci, due to this acquisition.

"In the relationship between Joe [Tucci, CEO of EMC] and John, who was a very emotional each point. Personally, I am worried about finding a more collaborative relationship with Chuck [Robbins, new CEO of Cisco] because it was a matter deeply personal between John and Joe emerged ".

And there are good reasons Gelsinger want to make friends with Robbins. Although the two companies are facing in the market, Cisco has quietly purchased a large stake in VMware.

Greater involvement of VMware know.

A month after VMware released its annual proxy statement earlier this year, VMware had to be updated, as "realized" Cisco has more than 5% of VMware, 6.5 million shares VMware said.

This game does not provide enough voters say Cisco, will oust the board of VMware and VMware NSX killed the product. But an activist investor looking for a hard sell EMC VMware. And if that wins investors, Cisco is sitting pretty.
